Objective Within the framework of the EOP, the principal scientific objectives on this topic are: Study of the emissions and deposits of chemical forms or species and aerosols (inventory of the biogenic emissions, combustion of biomass and fossil fuel, improvements of parameterizations of dry and wet deposits); Climatology of chemical tracers (CO, O3, carbon-soot) in West Africa: acquisition of satellite, aircraft and ground coherent data files to build a three-dimensional data base to be used for the validation and assimilation of global and regional models. Study of the seasonal and inter-annual variability of the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Climatology of the troposphere-stratosphere exchanges.
The observations to be carried out during the EOP will be based on satellite measures, ozone surveys, measurements using commercial aircraft, and the analyses of data from the follow-up in-situ networks already operational for the aerosols, the radiation and the chemistry of rainwater. Their objective is to provide before the SOP the detailed inventories of emissions for the principal sources of trace gases and aerosols, as well as data to validate the pattern of emissions and deposits in the meso-scale and global scale models, thanks to preliminary modelling exercises. Another objective of the EOP is the follow-up of the seasonal variations of the atmospheric pollutants for which various operations can be planned.
